Though most of our culture, language, family origins, and political institutions derive from Europe, those ties are being forgotten and are generally weakening. They are weakening for a variety of reasons: European values and priorities are increasingly different from our own; America itself is becoming more multicultural and is no longer so closely tied to Europe; and we have lost our main reason for working together— containing the Soviet Union. Obviously we will continue to work closely in the future with our European allies on a variety of issues, and our economic and cultural ties remain strong.
All four have a wide range of public services and a very high standard of living. They are among the most comfortable, affluent, and happiest places in the world in which to live. To support all these services, the North Europeans also pay considerably more in income taxes than is the case in the United States. They are also much more communalist and collectivist than the more individualistic United States. In foreign affairs the Nordics are much more committed to multilateralism, to achieving peace through negotiations and diplomacy, than is the more confrontational United States.
